HOW WE MAKE OUR JOURNALS

Is the whole story inside?

         - The entire story is included with all children's picture books  (unless the book is too thick for a 1” coil)

        - Selected chapters are included for all novels and larger texts

        - Original pages are spaced in 3 sections: front, middle, and back

What type of paper do you use?

  • standard: 24# acid free blank paper
  • Ivory or Cream paper is used to match the aging of the original book pages.
  • Premium lined, graph, and art paper can be requested for an additional charge.

How many sheets of paper are in each journal?

Typically each journal has 72-80 pages of journal paper.  This varies slightly depending on the thickness of the book cover and length of story.  We use different size coils that range between 3/4", 7/8", and 1" that work best with the thickness of the total journal when assembled.  For MEAD paper, approximately 150 pages are included.  For our heavy 96# Mixed Media papers, we will tell you the number of sheets that can fit and this can vary between 30-60.

Is there a machine that makes these?

Nope!  The process starts with a simple exacto knife and ruler.  From there we trim the original pages, paying attention to not cut of the text.  Sometimes it happens because of narrow margins.  Because most books are a unique size (except series), we have to measure the size of the book covers individually and cut the journal paper to size.  The number of wholes punched into the covers also varies.  Time is taken to center the holes from top to bottom both for aesthetic and sturdiness when the coil is placed.  Lastly the pages are hand threaded onto the coils and pressed shut. Voila! A beautiful journal has been made for a lucky someone.

Do you make the journals yourself?

Yes!  Most all of our journals are made in our Salt Lake City studio.  During our busy season we are a team of four.  From January until June, Brooke and Ben, taking their crafting on the road as they travel to events.  Many AirBnB and hotel rooms have been transformed into crafting spaces.
