A genuine piece of Vermont sugaring history.

This one-of-a-kind keepsake features an authentic, previously used maple tap from the Silloway family sugarhouse, the very same mountainside where sap is still harvested today — and where Red Barn Collections’ studio sits among the sugar maples.

Each metal tap was once hand-installed into a living maple tree to collect sap during Vermont’s sugaring season. Over years of use, these taps developed the natural weathering and patina you now see — subtle rust, texture, and marks of time that tell the story of countless spring harvests.

Today, each tap has been carefully cleaned, tied with a festive green ribbon, and prepared as a simple hanging ornament — a true piece of sugaring heritage ready to display.

No two taps are exactly alike. Variations in wear and aging are part of their charm and authenticity.

🍁 Why Maple Sugaring Matters in Vermont

Sugaring is one of Vermont’s most important traditions, dating back hundreds of years — first practiced by Indigenous peoples and later passed down through generations of family sugar makers.

Producing pure maple syrup is extraordinarily labor-intensive:

• Each tap typically collects sap for just a few weeks a year
• It takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup
• Historically, sap was gathered by hand using buckets and horse-drawn sleds
• Today, while tubing systems and modern evaporators have increased efficiency, the process remains deeply hands-on — dependent entirely on weather, timing, and careful craftsmanship

These vintage taps represent an earlier era of sugaring—when sap flows were gathered drop by drop and hauling was done one bucket at a time through snow-covered woods.

When you hold one, you’re holding part of that history.
